City Police Officer Benjamin Farhi first stopped the 2003 Acura driven by Matthew Wise, 28, on Railroad Avenue near Central Avenue shortly after 11 p.m. Thursday, Detective Capt. Darrin DeWitt said.

Farhi was walking toward the car when Wise hit the gas and sped off, DeWitt said.

A pursuit of barely six blocks ended when the Acura crashed at the HUMC loading dock, he said.

Wise got out carrying a 4-pound bag of pot and tried to run, the captain said, but Farhi grabbed him.

Other officers converged as Wise continued to resist, he said.

Officer Pedro Dominguez deployed pepper spray as Wise continued to battle before Officer Kevin Small finally used a Taser to subdue him.

Wise was brought into the hospital in custody for treatment. Police also seized the marijuana.

Wise has an adult criminal history that began shortly after he turned 18, with arrests for crimes that include aggravated assault, criminal restraint, resisting arrest, resisting arrest and drug possession and distribution, as well as probation violations, county records show.

Hackensack police charged Wise Thursday night with drug offenses, as well as resisting arrest by force and by flight.

He also received several traffic summonses before being released, pending a court date, under New Jersey’s 2017 bail reform law.
